About Transform Teaching and Learning
Transformative Teaching and Learning (TTL) is one of 20 strategic initiatives launched in 2021 to advance the goals and objectives of the Strategic Plan. TTL is charged with promoting innovation in teaching and learning practices by providing faculty support to innovate and scale transformative teaching practices, and creating conditions for all students to engage in meaningful experiential learning.
Leadership
Dr. Laurence Jacobs
Laurence J. Jacobs is the Senior Vice Provost for Education and Learning as well as a professor in the Schools of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The Education and Learning division umbrellas over five units, including undergraduate education, graduate and postdoctoral education, the Center for Teaching and Learning, arts, and access initiatives. Jacobs is a major leader in advancing the Institute Strategic Plan, particularly the Transformative Teaching and Learning, Expand Access, and Student Success Transformation priorities.
Dr. Steven Girardot
Dr. Steven P. Girardot is the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education with over twenty years of higher education experience. He is a proud Tech alumnus, having earned both a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and an M.S. in Chemistry from Georgia Tech. He completed his doctorate in Chemistry at Emory University and a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree in Epidemiology from Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health. As vice provost, Girardot is responsible for overseeing and executing programs that support and advance the quality and relevance of undergraduate education and the academic success of undergraduate students. He has chaired or co-chaired Georgia Tech's Complete College Georgia (CCG) initiative since 2011, and his work has helped achieve increases in graduation and retention rates over the past decade. Additionally, he serves on the advisory board for the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition; the University System of Georgia (USG) General Education Council; and as an elected board member of the Association of Undergraduate Education at Research Universities (UERU). He is a former president of the North American Association of Summer Sessions, for which he won an Outstanding Service Award, and was recently named as a 2024-2025 Fulbright France Ambassador.
Dr. Bonnie Ferri
Bonnie Ferri is the vice provost of Graduate and Postdoctoral Education at Georgia Tech and a professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). Ferri previously was the vice provost for Graduate Education and Faculty Development and held associate chair positions in ECE, for undergraduate and graduate studies. Ferri received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Notre Dame and a master's degree in mechanical engineering and aerospace engineering from Princeton University. She was also the first female Ph.D. graduate in electrical engineering at Tech. Shortly after, she became the first female faculty member in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). As Vice Provost of Graduate and Postdoctoral Education at Georgia Tech, Ferri leads strategic initiatives that enhance the academic experience, support professional development, and ensure the well-being of graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. Her role focuses on fostering an inclusive, innovative environment where students and postdocs can thrive both academically and professionally. Her research interests include embedded control systems, engineering education, and real-time computing.
Dr. Laura Carruth
Laura Carruth is the Associate Vice Provost for Transformative Teaching & Learning and Executive Director of the Center for Teaching & Learning. She earned a PhD in Biology from the University of Colorado-Boulder and completed a post-doc in Neuroscience and Physiological Science at UCLA. Prior to coming to Georg Tech, she was a tenured faculty member in the Neuroscience Institute and Department of Biology at Georgia State University where she served as the director for their CTL for nine years. Her research focuses on the neuroscience of learning and trauma-informed pedagogy, and she is interested in helping faculty adopt inclusive teaching practices that support all learners. Many of these practices also reduce student stress and increase cognitive bandwidth. She is also interested in learning analytics, new pedagogical strategies involving AI, and all areas of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL).
Dr. Kate Williams
Dr. Kate Williams provides leadership for the faculty-facing Transformative Teaching and Learning initiative on behalf of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL). A psychology instructor with a background in experiential learning, service learning, and career services, Kate has 20 years of experience in higher education in both faculty and leadership roles. For TTL, Kate works with faculty to develop innovative course design and teaching strategies that integrate and evaluate course-based high impact practices.
Dr. Christopher Reaves
Dr. Chris Reaves serves as Assistant Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and Executive Director of the Office of Experiential and Engaged Learning. He provides leadership for a large portfolio of high-impact practices and experiential education, including undergraduate research, student innovation, learning communities (iGniTe), community-based learning, undergraduate transition seminars (GT1000/2000) and work-based learning. He takes an active role in the Transformative Teaching and Learning ISP initiative, particularly around experiential learning and high-impact practices for undergraduates.
Cara-Joy Wong
Cara-Joy Wong is the Program and Portfolio Manager for the Office of the Senior Vice Provost for Education and Learning. The Education and Learning division umbrellas over five units, including undergraduate education, graduate and postdoctoral education, the Center for Teaching and Learning, arts, and access initiatives. Cara-Joy has held various roles within the Office of the Provost for over 10 years and has been influential in Georgia Tech’s Transformative Teaching and Learning institutional priority, particularly around the evolution of active learning and experiential learning opportunities for all students.
